Woodcraft, opgericht in 2017, is een van de meest veelbelovende strijkensembles van Nederland. Dit grensverleggende ensemble werkt met jazz, groove, improvisatie en vocalen. Ontstaan uit een hechte vriendschap geeft de groep de viool, altviool en de cello een vernieuwde stem binnen het hedendaagse muzieklandschap.
Gedreven door nieuwsgierigheid en openheid naar verschillende genres en speeltechnieken, zoekt Woodcraft voortdurend naar manieren om hun instrumenten opnieuw uit te vinden en zo een frisse en karakteristieke klank te creëren. Ze laten zich inspireren door muzikanten als Brad Mehldau, Herbie Hancock en het Turtle Island Quartet en componisten als Stravinsky en Sjostakovitsj. Dit leidt tot originele composities waarin vormen en stijlen samensmelten tot avontuurlijke muzikale verhalen.
Alle leden componeren en brengen hun eigen artistieke stem in, waarbij ze intensief samenwerken aan het compositieproces en een balans vinden tussen vorm en improvisatie.
In de afgelopen jaren bracht Woodcraft twee albums uit: Woodcraft (2023) en EQUINOX (2025).
Ze werden bekroond met zowel de eerste prijs als de publieksprijs tijdens de Dutch Jazz Competition.
Dit meeslepende ensemble bracht zijn muziek ook naar het buitenland, met tournees in Groot-Brittannië, Finland, Luxemburg, Italië en Spanje. In Nederland trad Woodcraft op bij gerenommeerde podia en festivals zoals het North Sea Jazz Festival, het Bimhuis, de Cello Biënnale, Down the Rabbit Hole en Orange Jazz Days.

Woodcraft - founded in 2017 - is one of the most exciting string ensembles from the Netherlands. This boundary-breaking ensemble works with jazz, groove, improvisation, and the human voice. Born from a long-standing friendship, the group gives the violin, viola and cello a renewed voice in today’s musical landscape. Through curiosity and openness to various genres and techniques, they seek to reinvent their instruments to create a fresh and distinctive sound. They draw inspiration from jazz and improvising musicians such as Brad Mehldau, Herbie Hancock, and the Turtle Island Quartet, as well as composers like Stravinsky and Shostakovich, resulting in original compositions that blend forms and styles into adventurous musical narratives.
All members compose and bring their own artistic voice, collaborating on the compositional process and striking a balance between structure and improvisation.
In recent years Woodcraft enhanced their musical career by releasing two albums: Woodcraft (2023) & EQUINOX (2025). They were awarded the first prize by the jury at the Dutch Jazz Competition, as well as the audience prize.
This captivating quintet took their music abroad by touring in Great Britain, Finland, Luxembourg, Italy and Spain. In the Netherlands, they have performed at venues and festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Bimhuis, the Cello Biënnale, Down the Rabbit Hole and Orange Jazz Days.
